Lingering National Disgrace in Armenia

Ever since I was a little boy growing up in Highland Park, Michigan, (1930’s) my dream was to someday see a free and independent Armenia so that our countrymen could live a proud and satisfying life. This dream stayed with me well into my adult life. But over the years I began to think that it just might never come true since Armenia was a captive nation of the Soviet Union. It was quite unlikely that the Soviets would ever grant us independence.

Rouben Galichian’s The Invention of History: Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Showcasing of Imagination is an important book that addresses a core issue facing the Armenian people ninety-five years after the Genocide: survival in the face of further erasures and eradications. This is an issue with many dimensions, some of them well known and others not. Galichian, whose works include Historic Maps of Armenia: The Cartographic Heritage (I.B. Tauris) and Countries of the Caucasus in Medieval Maps: Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan (Gomidas Institute Books), focuses here on one of the lesser known aspects--Azerbaijan and its attacks on Armenian history, identity and survival.

In December 2009, I had the opportunity to briefly visit Rwanda. In addition to the main Genocide Memorial in Kigali (where there is a section dedicated to the Armenian Genocide), I visited another memorial, about 35 km south of the capital. At this site, the Nyamata Church, 41,000 people were slaughtered in a few weeks. Yes, 41,000 people.

There is a tiny, remote, ancient, impoverished and landlocked country which is blockaded by two of its long-time foes. One of these enemies has the second-largest army in NATO, while the other is spending billions of petrodollars to buy weapons like there is no tomorrow. For exports/imports, the stamp-sized country is largely at the mercy of a capricious and untrustworthy neighbour which persecutes fellow nationals of the pocket-sized country. The only reliable neighbour of this hapless, diminutive country has become, in recent months, increasingly friendly with one of the embattled country’s major antagonists.
